Spain Beat Portugal Ronaldo Career Ends: Monday proved to be like a nightmare for Cristiano Ronaldo, one of the greatest players in the football world. Spain defeated Portugal 1-0 in a thrilling match of the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup played in a packed stadium in Dallas.

This defeat not only eliminated Portugal from the tournament, but also ended 39-year-old veteran Ronaldo’s last hope of winning the World Cup trophy forever. After the match, Ronaldo could not control his emotions and his wet eyes made millions of fans around the world emotional.

Spain’s dominance amid close competition

Ronaldo’s magic did not work in front of the strong wall of Spain

Cristiano Ronaldo tried his best to take his team forward throughout the match. He once performed an ‘acrobatic effort’ by jumping into the air. Through the ball he turned it towards the goal, which was again stopped by Simon. At the end of the first half the score remained tied at 0-0. Portugal got many chances in the second half also.

Ronaldo got another chance in the 59th minute, but due to lack of proper contact with the ball, his volley went outside the goal post. Spain had about 55 percent of the ball possession and their shots were more accurate than Portugal.

Mikel Merino scored the decisive goal

Just when it seemed that the match would drag into extra time, Spain dealt a decisive blow to Portugal as soon as the stoppage time started (in the 91st minute). Substitute Ferran Torres passed the ball to Mikel Merino, who fired the ball into the bottom corner with a superb finish. This one goal pierced Portugal’s defense and shattered Ronaldo’s hopes.
