Cristiano Ronaldo makes emotional admission about final World Cup journey

Cristiano Ronaldo has sparked immense sadness among fans after reportedly confirming that this will be his last World Cup.

Ahead of leading the Portugal side in a high-intensity clash against Spain on Monday, June 6, the 41-year-old footballer revealed that he wants to make the most of the tournament and does not want the upcoming match to be his last, while acknowledging that this is his final FIFA World Cup.

“It’s about enjoying it as much as possible. This will be my last World Cup, but let’s hope tomorrow isn’t my last game,” Ronaldo said during a pre-match news conference on Sunday, July 5.

He continued, “The day will come (when I retire from international football). But I’ll be honest. Whatever happens tomorrow, Cristiano will leave with a clear conscience, not 100%, but 1000%. Because I’ve given everything in football. I don’t need it, I have a good life, but it’s about passion. I play football because I love it… You have to enjoy every day. And I’ve scored three goals (at this World Cup), I’m not doing too badly, right?”

The Portugal skipper scored twice against Uzbekistan before adding a penalty against Croatia on July 2 in the Round of 32, marking his first World Cup knockout goal in this tournament.

Sharing details about his experience in the tournament so far, he noted that he has never felt as emotionally fulfilled as he does this year.

“It’s been fantastic. It goes beyond the pitch… This is the World Cup I’ll remember the most, because of people’s passion. It’s even more this time, I don’t know why. It’s been, emotionally, the best. I’ve enjoyed it very much,” Ronaldo remarked.

He, who has won the Euro 2016 with Portugal, stated that his career is complete even without a World Cup win.

“I’m not lacking anything in life. I’m not going to be more or less Cristiano because I win the World Cup. We have the qualities to win, but only one country can win it… Age gives you maturity and experience,” the footballer added.

Toward the end, he also expressed gratitude for the constructive criticism he has received throughout his long career, which ultimately helped him evolve.

“I’m thankful even for the attacks I receive. Turning 40 — and I hope to live another 40 years — with the criticism, that’s how you grow the most as a person. And I thank you journalists for that,” Ronaldo noted.
