Cristiano Ronaldo’s era ends, dream of winning World Cup remains unfulfilled
Delhi: The defeat against Spain in the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup 2026 not only ended Portugal’s journey but also put an end to Cristiano Ronaldo’s dream of winning the World Cup title forever. As soon as the final whistle was blown, the entire stadium became silent and in the eyes of 41-year-old Ronaldo, not the joy of victory but the pain of an unfulfilled dream was clearly visible. Spain was eliminated from the tournament after defeating Portugal 1–0. Millions of football fans were watching the emotional reaction of the player who enthralled fans around the world with his talent for more than two decades. Everyone wanted the career of this great football player to end with the World Cup trophy, but fate wrote a different story.
However, even after this defeat, Cristiano Ronaldo has not announced his retirement from international football. After the match he just said that he will first meet his family and then decide on his future with a calm mind. But the disappointment on his face showed that this defeat was not just the pain of losing a match, but the pain of breaking the dream which he had been carrying with him for the last 23 years. He may not have won the World Cup trophy, but the records in his name still make him one of the greatest players in football history. Ronaldo is the only player in the world to record a goal in all six of his FIFA World Cup appearances. He also holds the record of playing the maximum number of 233 international matches for Portugal and scoring 146 international goals. He scored a total of 11 goals in World Cup history, while taking his greatness to new heights by winning the Ballon d’Or five times.
Ronaldo scored three goals in this World Cup too, but could register only one goal in his entire World Cup career in the knockout stage. This is also the biggest truth of the game that not every great player gets the biggest award of his career. Despite this, Ronaldo’s legacy is not dependent on any trophy. Even at the age of 41, his fitness, discipline, hard work and dedication towards sports inspired the whole world. Playing at the highest level of international football for 23 consecutive years is a record in itself, which is considered extremely difficult to repeat. The World Cup trophy may never have come into his hands, but he taught crores of youth to dream big, work hard, get up and fight even after defeat and never give up. This is the reason why the World Cup was not named after him, but the hearts of millions of football lovers around the world are named after Cristiano Ronaldo forever.
