Dhanbad: Rumors of child theft are spreading widely in Jharkhand these days. In many districts, cases of mob going on rampage over rumor of child theft have come to light. The latest case has come to light from Dhanbad. An unknown youth was caught by the mob on Thursday night in Mahtotand village of Rajganj police station area on the rumor of child lifter. The young man was beaten severely with sticks, due to which he was seriously injured. Local head Manoj Mahato and some social workers, who came to intervene, also had to face the anger of the crowd. They were misbehaved and lathicharged.
Ruckus in Ranchi over rumor of child theft, three people including two women beaten up
As soon as the information was received, the police reached the spot and rescued the injured youth from the crowd and detained him. The youth is not in a position to speak and is being treated at a local nursing home. When the police asked the crowd whose child there was an attempt to steal, people became speechless and slowly started moving away from there. It was told that the crowd included people from many nearby villages and many had sticks and axes in their hands.
Woman and middle-aged man beaten in Bengabad
In Patrodih and Fursodih villages of Bengabad police station area of Giridih district, villagers caught a woman and a middle-aged man on suspicion of child theft. Both were beaten up. Police reached the spot and took both of them into safe custody. During interrogation, it was revealed that the middle-aged man was going to his in-laws’ house in an intoxicated state, while the woman was mentally unwell. Police clarified that no incident like child theft had taken place. This was purely a result of rumour.
Transgender targeted in Dhanbad
A transgender was beaten on suspicion of child theft near Matkuria Muktidham in Bankmod police station area of Dhanbad. The rumor of “child lifter” was spreading rapidly on social media. People surrounded the person without any confirmation and started beating him. As soon as the information was received, the police reached the spot under the leadership of station in-charge Praveen Kumar. Investigation revealed that on the occasion of Holi, the transgender was going from door to door giving good wishes and asking for money. No objectionable items were found during the search. The police clarified that the news of child theft was completely false and the attackers were warned.

Attack on deranged youth in Koderma
In Nawadih village of Markachho police station area of Koderma district, a young man was beaten up considering him to be a child lifter. The villagers caught him as a suspect and beat him up. Police reached the spot and saved the young man. According to the police station in-charge, the young man appears to be mentally unwell. During the investigation, no facts related to child theft came to light.
Three including a woman attacked in Ranchi’s Edalhatu
There was an uproar in Edalhatu of Bariatu police station area of the capital Ranchi at around 9.30 am on Thursday. Villagers caught three people carrying three-year-old boy Kishan Kumar in a tote on suspicion of child theft. The woman, toto driver and another youth were beaten up. As soon as the information was received, the police reached the spot and saved all three from the crowd. The woman identified herself as a resident of Gumla district and said that she had come to meet her daughter and son-in-law. According to him the child was already sitting in Toto. The police is investigating the matter and is trying to clarify the role of the Toto driver and another youth.
Villagers scared of rumors, law in danger
There is an atmosphere of fear among the villagers due to continuously spreading rumours. In many places, parents are afraid of sending their children to Anganwadi or to play outside. On the other hand, innocent people are becoming victims of the mob’s anger. Unconfirmed messages are spreading rapidly on social media, which is making the situation worse.
