Chennai Super Kings, in a big bet ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, have retained former captain MS Dhoni as an uncapped player for just Rs 4 crore. Earlier, the IPL franchises released their final lists of retained players on Thursday, October 31. Dhoni was retained by CSK for just Rs 4 crore, a reduction of Rs 8 crore from the previous season. This was possible for CSK only because the IPL Governing Council had brought back the uncapped player rule, allowing the franchise to retain any player in the uncapped category for just Rs 4 crore who has played for India in the last five years. Dhoni played his last match for India in July 2019 and he is fully fit to play for CSK as an uncapped player under this rule. While reacting to this move of CSK, Kaif said that CSK saved its Rs 10-15 crore. Kaif said on JioCinema, “CSK has played really well. He has saved Rs 10-15 crore. I think the way this rule was brought back was because we were carried away by emotions and we all wanted MS Dhoni to play for another year. I think CSK played very intelligently there. Speaking further, Kaif said, “I think whichever player plays for India, I was 36 years old when I last played an international match for India. Now if I am dropped from the team, but I keep performing well in IPL, so I should not come under the uncapped player rule. These are the players who have not played any international match yet. The CSK guys did a great job because they played it very well. We all got emotional because we will get a chance to see Dhoni for another year in the IPL and I think CSK will get the benefit of buying two additional players in the auction.
