CSK is losing, why is Dhoni still not playing? The coach told the whole truth
Just before the start of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, Mahendra Singh Dhoni was out for two weeks due to a calf injury. Fans were hopeful that he would return to the field after recovering from the injury. Although it has been almost a month since IPL 2026 started, Dhoni has not taken the field even once for Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Meanwhile news came that Dhoni had become fit. But he does not want to spoil the team’s combination, that is why he is not playing for CSK. Meanwhile, team head coach Stephen Fleming has given a big update on Dhoni’s fitness.
Fleming has said that Dhoni has again strained his calf, due to which his return is being delayed. After CSK’s crushing defeat at the hands of Gujarat Titans on Sunday (April 26), Fleming said in the press conference, ‘He (Dhoni) is desperate to make a comeback but the calf injury is very difficult. If he runs hard and the calf strain gets pulled again, he will be out of the entire tournament. We were a little hasty in the beginning and then during a warm-up match he strained his calf again. Since then he has been working hard to improve the injury but he suffered another setback, so the return is taking longer than we expected.

Dhoni will take the decision himself – Fleming
Fleming stressed that he himself will take the final decision on Dhoni’s return, while the team’s support staff is constantly monitoring his progress. He said, ‘He is our guide in this matter. He is working hard with the physio and doing all the rehab. We are just waiting for his next update but all I can say and I am not taking it lightly is that his condition is improving and he is trying his best.

CSK’s next match is against Mumbai Indians, which is in 5 days. During this period, CSK will continue to monitor Dhoni’s recovery process. However, Fleming’s update suggests that the chances of his return are slim. Dhoni has been participating in training sessions regularly but has mostly restricted himself to throw-downs. Recently, he was seen practicing wicketkeeping, which intensified the discussion about his possible comeback.
