Will Dewald Brevis Play vs Punjab Kings?

The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) franchise and its fans continue to fret over the injury status of their middle-order beast Dewald Brevis, more so since CSK lost their opening fixture in the IPL 2026. Brevis missed his side’s opening game due to a side strain.

The five-time champions have begun their season on a depressing note, having taken the field against the Rajasthan Royals (RR) without two of their first-choice players – Brevis and former skipper MS Dhoni, who is out of the first two weeks nursing a calf strain.

In Guwahati, after being asked to bat first by Riyan Parag, CSK stumbled to 19/3, with Sanju Samson and Ruturaj Gaikwad managing six runs each, and it later became 94/9. Jamie Overton’s 43 (36) helped CSK save some face, with their innings finishing on 127 all-out, which included 16 extras.

Any hope of a miraculous victory was dashed out in the powerplay by the 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who smoked 52 runs off only 17 balls, an innings laden with four fours and five sixes.

RR secured the victory in the 13th over with eight wickets in hand. The margin of this result meant RR’s net run rate climbed to +4.171, and CSK’s in the negative with the same figure. This margin of the loss could have a bearing later in the tournament – that is if CSK remains in contention for a playoff spot.

When and where is CSK’s next match?

CSK’s second match of IPL 2026 is against Punjab Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

CSK vs PBKS: Will Dewald Brevis Play Against Punjab Kings? Check Out Latest Injury Update

According to a report in RevSportz, Dewald Brevis is “most likely to miss the first two to three games” of CSK in IPL 2026. However, the South African was part of the practice session in Chennai.

On the eve of CSK’s first match against RR in Guwahati, head coach Stephen Fleming had said, “He is rehabbing and hopefully won’t be for too long.”

With Brevis absent, Matthew Short played at No. 4 in the CSK vs RR match but scored only two runs. CSK used Sarfaraz Khan as an Impact Sub against RR after losing early wickets while Kartik Tyagi made his debut in the middle order. They have the option of Urvil Patel and Prashant Veer on the bench.

Brevis is part of the growing injury list of the Super Kings squad. Before Dhoni and Brevis’ injury news was announced, CSK had already lost the services of Nathan Ellis for the entire season.

The franchise replaced him with his compatriot Spencer Johnson, a tall left-arm pacer. However, Johnson himself is recovering from a back injury and will join the CSK squad in late April.
