CSK vs SRH, IPL 2026: SunRisers Hyderabad have stormed into the IPL 2026 playoffs, while also taking Gujarat Titans with them as they beat the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by five wickets at the M.A Chidambaram Stadium or Chepauk on May 18, Monday. Having suffered their seventh loss of the season, the Super Kings’ playoff chances look more and more bleak. Nevertheless, it is worth explaining whether or not can the Super Kings qualify for the playoffs.
CSK vs SRH, IPL 2026: Can the Chennai Super Kings still qualify for the playoffs?
Having now lost to the SunRisers, the maximum the five-time champions can accumulate is 14 points. Even with 14 points, the Yellow Army can go through to the playoffs if the Rajasthan Royals lose both to the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and the Mumbai Indians. Additionally, they need the Super Giants to beat the Punjab Kings and the Kolkata Knight Riders to beat the Delhi Capitals but lose to the Mumbai Indians.
Hence, it is a five-way race and they need plenty of results to go their way if the Super Kings are to sneak a spot in the playoffs.
CSK vs SRH, IPL 2026: Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen play critical roles in tricky chase to take the SunRisers Hyderabad over the line
Having won the toss at the Chepauk, Ruturaj Gaikwad opted to bat first, citing it as a dry surface. None of the Super Kings’ batters reached fifty but Dewald Brevis top-scored with 44, while Kartik Sharma (32) and Shivam Dube (26) chipped in with valuable contributions to take the five-time champions to 180, setting 181 for the Orange Army to win.
Mukesh Choudhary sent Travis Head packing cheaply in the powerplay itself, forcing Ishan Kishan and Abhishek Sharma to consolidate. However, Akeal Hosein made the breakthrough to dismiss Abhishek Sharma for 26, breaking the partnership. But Heinrich Klaasen rode his luck on the way to his explosive 25-ball 47. Noor Ahmad dismissed the retired South African batter to swing the momentum into the home side’s way but Kishan ensured to get the boundaries and eventually brought the equation down to 13 off the final two overs.
Although Kishan got dismissed for 70 off 45 deliveries, Salil Arora and Ravichandran Smaran ensured to finish off the contest with five wickets to spare.
