Cut his wife into 72 pieces and hid her body in a deep freezer, IT engineer Rajesh Gulati’s life sentence remains intact.

Anupama Gulati murder case: Another big seal of justice has been given in the ‘Anupama Gulati Murder Case’ which shocked the country. The Nainital High Court has upheld the life imprisonment of software engineer Rajesh Gulati, who brutally murdered his wife and cut her body into 72 pieces. The court clearly said that no concession can be given for this level of cruelty. The accused had challenged the decision of the lower court, which was rejected by the High Court.

This case was discussed across the country due to its cruelty and was also compared with cases like Shraddha Walker that came to light in later years. The court acknowledged that the act of the accused is not only heinous but also shocks the conscience of the society.

7 year affair then marriage

The love story of Rajesh Gulati and Anupama started in 1992. After a relationship that lasted for about seven years, both of them got married on 10 February 1999. In the year 2000, the couple shifted to America. However, due to domestic discord, Anupama returned to India in 2003. After two years, Rajesh convinced her and called her again to America, where both of them had twins. But after returning to Dehradun from America in 2008, the tension in the relationship reached its peak.

The dreadful night of 17 October 2010

Investigation revealed that after coming to Dehradun, the fights increased. There were complaints of domestic violence and on court orders, Rajesh was asked to pay maintenance of Rs 20,000 every month, which he stopped after a month. On October 17, 2010, during a dispute over this issue, Rajesh slapped Anupama hard. She became unconscious when her head hit the wall, after which a frightened Rajesh strangled her.

The dead body was cut into 72 pieces

After the murder, the accused made a sinister plan to destroy the evidence. He bought an electric saw from the market and cut the body into 72 pieces. To hide the smell, bought a big deep freezer and kept the pieces in a plastic bag. He kept throwing some parts into the drain near Mussoorie Diversion every day. This sequence continued for months.

Secret revealed due to brother’s suspicion

After Anupama went missing, Rajesh kept telling the children that their mother had gone to their grandmother’s house. He also kept misleading his in-laws through emails for about two months. Eventually Anupama’s brother became suspicious. He sent a friend home as a ‘passport employee’. The truth came out from contradictory answers and when the police opened the deep freezer on 12 December 2010, the officials were stunned.

Strict message from the court

In 2017, the lower court of Dehradun had convicted Rajesh and sentenced him to life imprisonment and a fine of Rs 15 lakh. Now the High Court has also upheld this decision. The court said that jail is the appropriate place for such a brutal criminal and a clear message should be sent to the society that there is no forgiveness for such brutality.
