CWG 2026 Opening Ceremony: Mirabai Chanu and Lovlina Borgohain lead the Indian contingent, grand opening in Glasgow

Glasgow (Scotland): The Commonwealth Games 2026 officially began on Thursday with a grand opening ceremony in the city of Glasgow, Scotland. On this historic occasion, India’s Olympic medalists Mirabai Chanu and Lovlina Borgohain led the Indian contingent and took part in the parade march.

The opening ceremony took place at the Hydro Arena, where King Charles III officially opened the Games. This is the first time in the history of the Commonwealth Games that the opening ceremony was held inside an indoor stadium.

Opening ceremony decorated with Scottish culture and music

The opening ceremony was a spectacular display of Scotland’s rich culture, music and traditional performances. Players from 74 countries and regions were warmly welcomed at the ceremony.

The Indian contingent was seen on this occasion in dark blue blazer and trousers, which was the official ceremonial dress of the team. An attractive combination of Indian tradition and modern design was seen in this attire.

Parade march took place in new format

The Commonwealth Games parade began with the entry of Botswana. After this, players from countries of Africa, America, Asia, Caribbean, Oceania and Europe reached the arena sequentially.

This time a new format was adopted in the event. Unlike Birmingham 2022, where each country had two flag bearers, Glasgow 2026 featured one flag bearer and one baton bearer from each country and territory.

‘Doctor Who’ theme and royal style stole the show

The ceremony began with a special performance inspired by the popular series ‘Doctor Who’. Six-time Olympic cycling champion Sir Chris Hoy was also involved in this.

King Charles III and Queen Camilla then made a dramatic entry into the arena to the famous ‘TARDIS’ theme. A special film was also shown during the ceremony, depicting a historical and cultural journey through Scotland.

The ceremony concluded with the Commonwealth Oath.

The opening ceremony concluded with the raising of the Commonwealth flag and the taking of the oath by the players, officials and judges.

Athletes Paul Foster, Robin Love and Lesley Roy took the Commonwealth Oath on behalf of all participants and reiterated their resolve to conduct the competitions in the spirit of sportsmanship.
