The Union government has submitted a detailed action plan to the Supreme Court to curb the digital arrest scams that are growing rapidly in the country. According to a report by the Indian Cyber ​​Crime Coordination Center (I4C), which operates under the Ministry of Home Affairs, a multi-pronged strategy is being adopted to tackle cyber crime with the collaboration of the Department of Telecom, the Reserve Bank of India, tech companies and investigative agencies.

According to the report, WhatsApp has suspended around 9,400 accounts related to digital arrest scams in the last 12 weeks. Accounts misusing police or government identity cards are also being identified. Meanwhile, the Reserve Bank of India has issued a new SOP for banks, directing immediate blocking of suspicious transactions to effectively control the network.

As part of the new security system, WhatsApp is preparing to introduce features that will alert users about calls from suspicious or unknown numbers. Additionally, it plans to automatically hide profile photos of suspicious callers to reduce misperceptions of fraudsters.

In order to investigate larger cases, CBI has decided to take over cases involving frauds of more than Rs 10 crore. Currently, three major cases have been re-registered, including one in Delhi, where a fraud of Rs 22.92 crore was committed.

Ban on fake SIMs

Department of Telecom and telecom companies have planned swift action to curb the menace of fake SIM cards. The aim is to block any suspicious SIM within two to three hours of detection.

Govt preparing to implement BIVS

The government is gearing up to roll out the Biometric Identity Verification System (BIVS) across the country, which is targeted to be implemented by December 2026, to make the SIM issuance process more transparent.

During the hearing, a bench headed by Chief Justice Suryakant took suo motu cognizance of the matter and directed all the agencies to jointly develop a robust system.
