Two-time Olympic medalist Manu Bhaker, World Chess Champion D Gukesh, Indian men's hockey team captain Harmanpreet Singh and para athlete Praveen Kumar were honored with the prestigious Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award by President of India Draupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Friday. .

Earlier on January 2, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports issued a statement announcing the names of the recipients of the prestigious National Sports Awards 2024. On Friday, the National Sports Awards 2025 was held at Rashtrapati Bhavan, where the President of India honored all the recipients of the Khel Ratna, Arjuna Award and Dronacharya Award.

Manu Bhaker's Olympic medal

Manu Bhaker marked the first finish in the medal tally for India at the Olympics when she finished third in the women's individual 10 m air pistol event, becoming the first female shooter to win an Olympic medal for India. After that, Sarabjot Singh and Bhakar won a bronze medal in the 10 meter air pistol (mixed team) event, India's first shooting team medal.

D Gukesh Youth World Chess Champion

Meanwhile, Gukesh's success story was one of the major achievements of Indian sports in 2024. He created history by defeating Ding Liren of China in the deciding 14th game of the FIDE World Championship match in Singapore in December.

At the Championships, tied at 6.5–6.5 in the final game, Gukesh performed brilliantly to win 7.5–6.5, becoming the youngest ever world champion at the age of 18. He also became India's second World Chess Champion after Viswanathan Anand.

Praveen Kumar and Harmanpreet raised flags

Para athlete Praveen Kumar won gold medal in men's high jump T64 at Paralympics 2024. So Harmanpreet Singh was a part of Tokyo Olympics, where India won the bronze medal in hockey. He has also been nominated for FIH Player of the Year. Under his leadership, the Indian team won the bronze medal in the Paris Olympics.

Indian men's hockey players Jarmanpreet Singh, Sanjay, Abhishek, Sukhjeet Singh and women's hockey team captain Salima Tete have been honored with the Arjuna Award for their outstanding performance in sports and games 2024.

Indian chess grandmaster Vantika Agarwal and athlete Jyoti Yaraji have also been honored with the Arjuna Award. Along with this, para athletes Preeti Pal, Jeevanji Deepti, Ajit Singh, Sachin Sarjerao Khiladi, Dharambir, Pranav Surma, Hokato Sema, Simran and Navdeep will also receive the Arjuna Award.
