Dale Steyn Quits As Sunrisers Hyderabad Fast Bowling Coach Ahead Of IPL 2025

Former South African pacer Dale Steyn, who was associated with Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL 2024 as fast bowling coach, took to X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday (October 17) to announce his decision of stepping down from the role. According to Steyn, who played in the cash-rich league for RCB, Gujarat Titans, and SRH as a player before taking up the role of Orange Army’s fast bowling coach, he won’t return to India next year for IPL but will continue to work with SRH’s sister franchise Sunrisers Eastern Cape in SA20 and help them win the third title in a row.

“Cricket announcement. A big thank you to Sunrisers Hyderabad for my few years with them as bowling coach at the IPL, unfortunately, I won’t be returning for IPL 2025. However, I will continue to work with Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the SA20 here in South Africa. Two time winners here in SA20, let’s try make it THREE in a row,” Steyn tweeted.

Steyn was appointed as SRH’s fast bowling coach in December 2021, and he served the role for three years. Under his mentorship, players like Umran Malik made a big name for himself in the IPL 2022 by dismissing 22 batters in 14 matches, and then he also got a chance to play for India.

In the 2024 edition of the cash-rich league, Steyn worked with Australia’s ODI and Test captain Pat Cummins, who was also appointed as Orange Army’s captain after being signed for Rs 20.50 crore in the IPL 2024 auction.

SRH to retain Klaasen

2016 IPL champion Sunrisers is set to retain South African wicketkeeper-batter Heinrich Klaasen along with Cummins and Abhishek Sharma ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. It has been reported by ESPNCricinfo that Klaasen will be SRH’s No. 1 retention for Rs 23 crore and Cummins will continue his association with the Kavya Maran-owned side for Rs 18 crore. On the other hand, India’s top-order batter Abhishek is set to be retained for Rs 14 crore.

Apart from them, the Sunrisers are also likely to retain Travis Head and Nitish Kumar Reddy.
