The government has issued a statewide high alert as incessant rains in Nagaland have led to floods, landslides and waterlogging. The district administration has been instructed to intensify relief and rescue operations, evacuate people from sensitive areas to safe places and maintain essential services.
Kohima: Due to continuous heavy rains in Nagaland, the situation of floods, landslides and waterlogging is becoming serious in many parts of the state. In view of the situation, the state government has issued a high alert in the entire state and directed all the District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMAs) to remain alert. The government has asked the district administration to keep emergency operation centers active, continuously monitor the affected areas and immediately start relief and rescue operations in case of any disaster. The administration says that in the current circumstances the biggest priority is to ensure the safety of people’s life and property.
Instructions to the district administration to keep the disaster management system fully active
The state government has directed all the districts to keep their respective District Emergency Operation Centers (DEOCs) fully active and to monitor the weather situation round the clock. Officials have been instructed to keep relief and rescue teams ready to deal with any unexpected situation and work in coordination with the local administration, police, health department and other concerned agencies. The government believes that with prompt action in time, the potential loss can be reduced to a great extent.
Preparation to send people from sensitive areas to safe places
The government has asked to especially focus on those areas where there is a high risk of waterlogging, river bank erosion or landslides. The district administration has been directed to shift people living in low-lying areas, river banks and near unstable slopes to safer places if necessary. Also, such areas should be continuously monitored so that immediate action can be taken if the weather conditions worsen. The administration has also started preparations for relief camps and necessary resources.
Emphasis on maintaining availability of essential commodities
The government has directed the district administration to ensure that there is no shortage of food grains, fuel, drinking water, medicines and other essential commodities during the emergency situation. The concerned departments have been asked to maintain adequate storage and make arrangements for timely delivery of relief material to the affected areas if needed. The government believes that during natural disasters, continuous availability of essential services plays an important role in providing relief to the people.
Machines deployed to restore road connectivity
In view of the possibility of many roads being blocked due to landslides due to continuous rains, the government has given instructions to keep JCB, excavators and other heavy machines ready. With the help of these machines, traffic will be restored as soon as possible by removing the debris and soil fallen on the roads. The administration aims to ensure that relief and rescue teams, medical services and essential supplies can reach the affected areas without any hindrance.
Special vigilance on power supply in submerged areas
The state government has directed the electricity department to temporarily stop power supply as a precautionary measure in areas where waterlogging is serious so that accidents like electrocution can be avoided. Officials have also been asked to restore power supply as soon as possible after the water level returns to normal so that people do not have to face much trouble.
Appeal to people to avoid unnecessary travel and remain alert
The government has appealed to citizens to avoid non-essential travel during inclement weather and avoid landslide-prone roads, swollen rivers and waterlogged areas. The administration has also forbidden people from fishing, swimming or going near rivers and streams with fast flows. Along with this, citizens have been appealed to trust only official information and not share any unconfirmed information or rumor on social media.
Helpline number released in case of emergency
The state government has activated the helpline services of the State Emergency Operation Center to deal with any emergency. Citizens have been asked to immediately contact the State Disaster Control Room if any flood, landslide or any other disaster occurs. The administration has assured that all concerned departments are fully alert and additional relief and rescue teams will also be deployed if required.

Weather experts believe that due to continuous rains, the situation in some areas may become more challenging in the coming days.
