Danger of data leak, know how your information is misused?
Data Leak: Data leakage has become a serious problem worldwide. Imagine, you ordered a pizza from Domino's. If their data is leaked, someone can get all this information about you – when you ate the pizza, what toppings you chose, where it was delivered and how much you ordered. All this can be traced just through your mobile number.
Now imagine, you get a call. The caller says, “I'm speaking from Domino's. You ate this pizza on this date, it was delivered to this location. You also ordered a cold drink.” You accept him as right because he is telling everything correctly. He then makes you a tempting offer – perhaps a travel trip or cashback. You trust him and share your information. You are just stuck and money is withdrawn from your bank account.
Responsibility for data leak
Who is at fault in this situation? Obviously, from the company to which you gave your information. The misuse of your personal information is a result of their negligence.
Recently DPDP Act (Digital Personal Data Protection Act) has been implemented in India. This law ensures the security of your data. If your personal data is leaked, a fine of up to Rs 250 crore can be imposed on the responsible organization.
Data sharing and data breach
Many times companies share your data with third parties. But leaking and breaching it is different. Data breach means that your information has been stolen in an unauthorized manner.
Recently, a case of data leak of Star Health came to light, in which people's health records became public. If a person's health information is leaked, it can cause serious problems.
Sensitivity of health data
Suppose, you went to a doctor for treatment of some psychological illness. If this information gets leaked and you are the CEO of a company, it can affect your reputation and the company's position in the stock market. People can take advantage of your health condition and it can affect your deals.
The importance of confidentiality of health data has also been seen in history. When India and Pakistan were divided, Mohammad Ali Jinnah was suffering from cancer. No one had this information at that time. He died a year after partition. Had this information become public earlier, the circumstances of the split might have changed. Lives of millions of people could have been saved.
security is important
We need to understand how valuable our information is. Health data, location data and other personal information are things whose misuse can affect us mentally, economically and socially.
After the implementation of the Digital Data Security Act in India, the responsibility of data security on companies has increased further. If your data is leaked, you can take legal action.
We all should remain alert. Whenever a call or email comes in which your personal information is mentioned, do not trust it immediately. Protect your information carefully and understand that your identity is your greatest asset.
