Will Khawaja open instead of Head in the third Test of Ashes? Australia got a special suggestion

Key Points:

David Warner has advised to bring back Usman Khawaja in the opening before the third Ashes Test. He believes that Travis Head is more effective in the middle order. According to Warner, this change will create the right balance for the team and increase pressure on England.

Delhi: Former Australian opener David Warner has advised to field Usman Khawaja as an opener again for the third Ashes Test. He believes that Khawaja’s return and Travis Head’s return to number 5 will be better for the team. Warner said that this change will prove difficult for England also.

Khawaja could not play the last Test in Perth because he was suffering from back spasm. In their place, Travis Head and Jake Weatherald opened and both made a good partnership. Despite this, Warner believes that Head’s real strength lies in the middle order and Khawaja’s experience gives the team an advantage in the opening.

Warner suggested getting Khawaja to open

Warner said, “I think Uzi (Usman Khawaja) will come back to open and Travis Head will go down again. It will be even more difficult for England.” He also told that Travis Head himself likes to play at number 5 because that is where he has scored most of his big scores.

Head’s record at number 5 is quite good. He scores runs at an average of more than 41 in this position and eight of his ten Test centuries have come at this number. This also includes his three centuries scored at Adelaide Oval.

Warner also admitted that Head may open in the future, especially when Khawaja retires, but added that this decision may not always yield the desired results.

He said, “Earlier we did not have such an aggressive batsman in the middle order. Now the team has this option. If Khawaja retires in the future, then there can be a thought of sending the head up, but it will not always be successful and then he will have to be brought back down. In such a situation, the selectors will also have to find a new opener.”

The third Test is to start in Adelaide from 17th December. In such a situation, it will be very important for the team management to decide whether Khawaja will return to open or the existing pair will be given a chance.
