Former Delhi minister Kailash Gehlot joined the BJP on Monday, a day after resigning from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). He attended the BJP headquarters in the presence of Union ministers Manohar Lal Khattar and Harsh Malhotra, Delhi unit president Virendra Sachdeva and national media chief Anil Baluni, among others.
Addressing the media after joining the party, Gehlot said that an attempt is being made to create a false story that his decision to leave AAP was the result of pressure from ED and CBI.
He said that the truth is that AAP has compromised with its values. Khattar described Gehlot's joining the party as a “turning point” in the national capital's politics. The BJP is hopeful that Gehlot's joining the party will boost its prospects in the upcoming assembly elections as it tries to wrest power from AAP.
Sachdeva said that Gehlot, a two-time MLA and lawyer, is known for his good work. The former transport minister had quit the AAP party on Sunday, alleging that “political ambitions” had overtaken the party's commitment to the people.
“Instead of fighting for the rights of the people, we are only fighting for our political agenda,” Gehlot, 50, said in his resignation letter to AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal.
Gehlot, a prominent face of AAP, also took a dig at Kejriwal and raised some “strange” and “shameful” controversies like 'Sheeshmahal'. He said this makes everyone doubt “whether we still believe in being the 'common man'”. AAP had claimed that Gehlot's decision was influenced by the cases being investigated against him by central agencies.
