Attack on Bondi Beach in broad daylight: 12 killed, Hanukkah celebration turns into horror
A heart-wrenching shooting incident on the famous Bondi Beach of Sydney, Australia on Sunday evening shook the entire country. At around 6:45 pm local time, at least 12 people were killed and dozens of others seriously injured when gunfire erupted during the Jewish community’s Hanukkah celebration. Police have termed it a terrorist attack.
What happened?
The incident came to light when the Jewish community’s event called “Chanukah by the Sea” was going on at the beach. Two armed men started attacking, causing hundreds of people present there to run and hide. The loud sound of firing created fear, panic and anarchic atmosphere in the area.
In the initial investigation, police said that one attacker was killed on the spot, while the other has been taken into custody. Some reports suggest the involvement of a third gunman is also under investigation. Authorities have sealed the area and urged people to stay away from Bondi Beach.
What did the eyewitnesses see?
Eyewitnesses present at the incident site said that suddenly bullets started raining and people started running here and there screaming. Some said they saw children and elderly people falling to the ground, while others saw injured people being rushed to hospital. An eyewitness described it as the most terrifying experience of his life.
Some people also told that as soon as the terrorists arrived, panic spread in the area and people hid in nearby banks or shops to find shelter. Meanwhile, some brave persons tried to take the injured persons to a safe place.
Moments of bravery also came to the fore
Amidst the fear and chaos, some brave moments also brought light to the incident. A passerby, later identified as Ahmed Al‑Ahmed, pinned down one of the gunmen and wrested his gun, helping to prevent more widespread damage. This bold step was appreciated not only by the local police but also by the public.
Police and government response
New South Wales Police have surrounded the entire area and are confirming the number of dead and injured. Considering the incident as a terrorist attack, security agencies have increased vigilance across the country. Many international leaders, including Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, have strongly condemned the act.
After the incident, there is an atmosphere of deep shock and concern not only in the Jewish community in Australia but also among the common citizens. Bondi Beach is generally known as a peaceful beach and tourist destination, but this attack has seriously hurt the peace and social unity there.
