Who Is Ghislaine Maxwell?
Ghislaine Maxwell is a former British socialite and the daughter of media tycoon Robert Maxwell. Her privileged life collapsed after she was linked to Epstein’s crimes, as she worked closely with the disgraced financier for years and managed several of his properties.
Epstein once described her as his “best friend,” but photos coming from the DOJ indicate that they both were in a romantic relationship.
Prosecutors said Maxwell used her influence to gain the trust of teenage girls and draw them into Epstein’s world.

Maxwell is serving her sentence and was at a federal prison in Tallahassee, Florida, but later shifted to a new minimum-security facility in Texas, which is a women’s prison. Her lawyers say she helps other inmates with legal paperwork and translation work.
Her attorney described her as a “very popular inmate” because she speaks multiple languages and assists fellow prisoners with appeals. Maxwell continues to challenge her conviction. Appeals courts rejected her arguments tied to Epstein’s 2008 plea deal. Her legal team later petitioned the Supreme Court.
In 2024, Maxwell also met with senior Justice Department officials. Her lawyer said she cooperated fully and “didn’t hold anything back.”
What Crimes Was Ghislaine Maxwell Convicted Of?
Federal investigators arrested Maxwell in July 2020, and she faced six felony charges related to sex trafficking and grooming minors between 1994 and 1997. The prosecution argued that she helped recruit and manipulate underage girls for Epstein.
Then-US Attorney Audrey Strauss said, “She pretended to be a woman they could trust. All the while she was setting them up to be sexually abused.” Maxwell denied all allegations but was convicted on five counts in 2021.
In June 2022, a federal court sentenced Maxwell to 20 years in prison and fined her $750,000. During sentencing, she addressed the victims directly.
She said, “To you, all the victims … I am sorry for the pain that you experienced.” She added, “It is my sincerest wish to all those in this courtroom and to all those outside this courtroom that this day brings a terrible chapter to an end, to an end.”
Ghislaine Maxwell in Epstein Files
Ghislaine Maxwell appeared in a series of highly provocative photographs released on December 19 as part of a large US Department of Justice document disclosure. The images, drawn from thousands of files, show Maxwell posing in sexually suggestive ways, including exposing herself, posing topless, and leaning into the lap of an unidentified man.
One photo shows her seated in a luxury sports car wearing a robe, positioned in a manner meant to draw attention, while others from the same evening capture her in close, intimate poses with celebrity magician David Copperfield, including embraces from behind.
Additional images show Maxwell posing topless with another person partially visible in the frame, and one photograph appears to place her aboard Epstein’s private jet, with Epstein nearby and reacting to the scene.
