Deadly attack on senior police officer in South Africa
Senior South African police officer Feroz Khan was fatally attacked in Johannesburg. He was to testify in the corruption investigation. He has been admitted to the hospital after being shot and the police is investigating the matter.
Johannesburg: There has been a fatal attack on a senior police officer in South Africa, in which he narrowly escaped. Suspended deputy crime intelligence chief Major-General Feroz Khan was shot at in Johannesburg on Sunday evening as he was returning home in his car, according to police. Critically injured Khan was immediately taken to the hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery.
The attack came at a time when he was scheduled to testify before a public commission investigating police corruption in the country. This incident has raised serious questions about the deepening crisis within South Africa’s law and order and police system.
The incident happened just before the appearance in the investigation commission.
Feroz Khan was to appear before the Madlanga Commission, which is investigating allegations of corruption and infiltration of organized crime into the South African police force. The commission was set up last year after senior police officer Lieutenant-General Nhlanla Mkhwanazi claimed that criminal gangs had gained access to government institutions. According to the information, Khan’s name has cropped up in several investigation cases, including a botched crackdown on an alleged drug-raid in Johannesburg in 2021.
Police statement – It is too early to speculate on motive
South African police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said it was too early to speculate on the reasons behind the attack. He said that the investigation is ongoing and all possible angles are being worked on.
According to the police, it would not be right to say whether the attack is related to his possible testimony in the commission of inquiry or not. Officials said that all aspects are being investigated seriously.
Earlier also arrested on charges of illegal gold trading
Major-General Feroz Khan was arrested along with two others in May. He was accused of illegal gold trading and illegal possession of precious metals. The case relates to an incident in 2021, when approximately 75.9 grams of unmelted gold was recovered from a trader at Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport.
During investigation, the businessman claimed that he was working as an undercover agent for some police officers. However, later investigation found that there was no record of any authorized undercover operation at that time. According to prosecutors, Khan and another senior official had instructed officials to release the businessman who came under suspicion.
Serious questions on organized crime and police system
The case is part of a wider investigation into possible infiltration of organized crime into South African policing. Allegations that surfaced last year said that criminal networks had increased influence in the government system.
Under this investigation, names of many senior officers have come to light, including Feroz Khan. His testimony was considered important in the case, especially in the context of allegations related to the alleged drug-raid and gold trafficking.
Political and business relations also investigated
According to local media reports, Khan was also to be questioned during the investigation over his alleged links with some political figures and business networks. Among these, names like opposition leader Julius Malema and businessman Brown Mogosi have been mentioned. However, Khan has not commented publicly on these allegations.
Security and political concerns increased due to the attack
This shooting incident has raised serious concerns over the security system and internal structure of law enforcement agencies in South Africa. Experts say that if such an attack occurs on a senior investigating officer, it indicates that criminal networks can be quite influential. Human rights and security analysts believe that such incidents can hamper the investigation process and increase pressure on witnesses.
Investigation continues, police working on all angles
Police have said that the case is being investigated from multiple directions and no possibility can be ruled out. At present, the arrest of any suspect has not been officially confirmed.
Officials said forensic and intelligence investigations are underway to ascertain the nature of the attack and the motive behind it.
