Balasaheb was born on 23 January 1926 in Pune. Thackeray, who started as a cartoonist, started his own newspaper 'Marmik' in 1960. His inclination towards politics came from his father Keshav Sitaram Thackeray, who was fighting to get statehood for Maharashtra. Shiv Sena, founded by him in 1966, may have been torn apart but is still running the government in Maharashtra.

Bal Thackeray was the vocal voice of nationalism

Balasaheb was very vocal about Hindutva and nationalism. Years ago, in an interview given to Congress leader Rajeev Shukla, he had clearly said that if he becomes the Prime Minister, he will not allow even a single Pakistani or Bangladeshi to live in the country. In the interview, Rajiv asked Balasaheb whether he would become PM if he got a chance. On this Balasaheb said that for the interest of the country he will have to become PM but his rules will be strict.

'First of all I will clean Kashmir'

After this Rajiv asked what would be the first thing he would do if he became the Prime Minister of the country. On this Balasaheb said, 'First of all I will clean Kashmir. Not a single person from Pakistan or Bangladesh will live here. I will not prosecute even a single terrorist. There will be orders to shoot.

Apart from this, Balasaheb Thackeray was a staunch supporter of Ayodhya Ram temple. Once in a popular TV show, when a journalist asked him whether he had a hand in the demolition of the Babri Masjid or not, Balasaheb immediately replied, “It was not the hand but the foot…”

Balasaheb Thackeray is known as the voice of Marathi people but there were many controversial issues with which Balasaheb's name was associated.
