The special session of Parliament is set to discuss amendments in the Nari Shakti Vandan Act 2023 as well as the proposed Delimitation Bill. The government is expected to introduce a constitutional amendment to implement 33 percent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha, starting from the 2029 general elections. According to sources, the Central Government is also considering increasing the number of Lok Sabha seats from 543 to 850. Of these, 815 seats are proposed to be allotted to the states, while 35 seats will be reserved for Union Territories. This step is linked to the implementation of the reservation policy and the comprehensive delimitation process. However, many leaders of opposition parties have expressed concerns. Especially regarding the delimitation plan. He has argued that this process could disproportionately affect the southern states, as it could limit their representation in the Lok Sabha. Additionally, opposition parties have also questioned the timing of the bill and alleged that the government is rushing the process before the next general census. Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has written a letter to the chief ministers of the four southern states – Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala, as well as the Union Territory of Puducherry, calling for a united front against the Centre’s proposed delimitation of Lok Sabha constituencies.
