Ranchi: An important legal turn has come in the ongoing famous Badgai land scam case involving former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren. Debate on discharge petition completed, decision reserved
An important hearing was held on Wednesday in the special court of ED located in Ranchi in the alleged money laundering case related to 8.46 acres of land in Badgai area. Both the parties presented their arguments on the discharge petition filed by Hemant Soren in the court of Special Judge Yogesh Kumar.
After completion of the hearing, the court reserved its decision. Now the verdict in this case will be pronounced on June 8. This decision of the court will decide the direction of the further judicial process.
Hemant Soren has declared himself innocent
Hemant Soren has claimed in his petition that he has no connection with this alleged land scam and the allegations made against him are baseless. He has demanded acquittal from the court in the case.
It was argued on his behalf that there is no sufficient basis in the allegations presented by the investigating agency on which a case can be prosecuted against him. At the same time, ED presented its allegations and facts related to the investigation before the court.
Chargesheet has been filed against 18 accused
In this case, the Enforcement Directorate has already filed a charge sheet against 18 accused including Hemant Soren. Taking cognizance of the charge sheet, the court has provided police papers to all the accused.
Charges are to be framed as part of the further proceedings of the case. However, before this the court has to give its decision on the discharge petition of Hemant Soren. This is the reason why the decision of June 8 is considered very important in this case.
What will happen next after the decision?
If the court accepts Hemant Soren’s discharge petition, he will not have to face trial in this case and may get relief. On the other hand, if the petition is rejected, the court will proceed with the process of formally framing charges against all the accused.
After this, regular hearing and trial will begin, in which the prosecution and defense will present their evidence and arguments before the court.
