Deendayal Port welcomes maiden call of MV ESL Shekou, boosting global trade connectivity
Deendayal Port Authority (DPA), Kandla, has welcomed the maiden call of MV ESL Shekou under Emirates Shipping Lines’ ECSX Service at the Kandla International Container Terminal (KICT), marking a significant development in the port’s international shipping connectivity.
The vessel made its inaugural call at Kandla on June 18, reinforcing the port’s position as one of India’s key maritime gateways and highlighting growing confidence among global shipping operators in the country’s logistics infrastructure.
Maiden voyage strengthens trade links
According to Deendayal Port Authority, the arrival of MV ESL Shekou is expected to enhance trade connectivity and strengthen commercial linkages between India and international markets served by Emirates Shipping Lines. The vessel’s inclusion in the ECSX Service network is aimed at improving cargo movement efficiency and providing exporters and importers with greater access to global shipping routes. Port officials said the development reflects the increasing importance of Kandla as a major hub for containerized cargo and international maritime trade.
Large vessel calls at Kandla terminal
MV ESL Shekou arrived at Kandla International Container Terminal with a Gross Registered Tonnage (GRT) of 66,280 metric tonnes and a Length Overall (LOA) of 276 metres. The vessel is among the larger container ships operating in regional trade networks and its arrival demonstrates the capability of KICT to handle modern, high-capacity container vessels. Officials noted that the successful handling of the vessel underscores the terminal’s operational readiness and infrastructure strength.
Confidence in Kandla’s maritime infrastructure
The maiden call is being viewed as a positive indicator of growing confidence among international shipping lines in Kandla’s facilities and services. Port authorities said the addition of new shipping services contributes to improving supply-chain efficiency, expanding cargo-handling opportunities and enhancing the competitiveness of Indian exporters in global markets.
The development also aligns with ongoing efforts to strengthen India’s maritime sector and improve port-led economic growth under the country’s broader logistics and trade initiatives.
Strategic boost for container operations
Industry stakeholders expect the ECSX Service to provide additional options for cargo movement through Kandla, supporting both import and export trade. With the arrival of MV ESL Shekou, Deendayal Port Authority said it remains committed to expanding connectivity, improving operational efficiency and attracting more global shipping services to the port.
The inaugural call represents another milestone in Kandla’s efforts to strengthen its role in international maritime trade and container transportation.
