Deepavali Added to UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List: India Celebrates Global Recognition

Deepavali, the festival of lights, has officially been inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, marking a proud moment for India. The decision places Deepavali alongside several cultural traditions from nations including Ghana, Georgia, Ethiopia, Egypt, and Congo.

UNESCO announced the recognition in a statement on X, posting:
“New inscription on the #IntangibleHeritage List: Deepavali, #India. Congratulations!”

India is currently hosting the session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH), where the decision was adopted. The key meeting is being held at Delhi’s historic Red Fort.

Deepavali—also known globally as Diwali—is the most widely celebrated Hindu festival in India and among the Indian diaspora. It symbolizes the victory of light over darkness and good over evil and is observed with lamps, rangolis, prayers, and community gatherings.

India Welcomes UNESCO Recognition

Union Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat welcomed the move, saying the festival carries deep emotional significance for Indians and has been passed down through generations.

“This UNESCO tag is also a responsibility; we must ensure Deepavali remains living heritage,” he told PTI.

The 2025 ICH session is chaired by HE Vishal V Sharma, India’s Ambassador and Permanent Delegate to UNESCO. The 20th session of the committee is underway from December 8 to 13.

Cultural Traditions From Other Countries Also Recognised

Alongside Deepavali, UNESCO added several cultural symbols from countries across the world to the heritage list. These include:

Iceland – Swimming pool culture
Haiti – The Compas
Ghana – Highlife music and dance
Georgia – Wheat culture
Ethiopia – Gifaataa, Wolaita People’s New Year Festival
El Salvador – Confraternity of flowers and palms
Egypt – Koshary, daily life dish
Czechia – Amateur theatre acting
Cyprus – Commandaria wine
Cuba – Cuban Son
Yemen – Hadrami And gathering

Deepavali’s inclusion places India once again at the forefront of global cultural heritage preservation and highlights the universal appeal of its traditions.
