Deepfake will be curbed, Delhi High Court asks Center to file report, be careful

New Delhi : The Delhi High Court on Thursday, October 24, directed the Center to file a status report on the measures taken by the government to deal with the growing threat of deepfake technology. Let us tell you that Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela said that the report should outline the measures taken at the government level and also tell whether there will be a high level committee to find a solution.

The court, while hearing two petitions against de-regulation of deepfake technology, said it was a “very serious issue” which needs to be dealt with on priority basis by the authorities. The bench further said, what are you doing? The cases of deepfakes are increasing day by day…I am happy that people from the industry have started some initiatives and are working to spread awareness among the people.

Use of deepfake and questions raised in court

Using deepfake technology, fake videos, audios and pictures that resemble the original are created. The court said that artificial intelligence (AI) cannot be prohibited because AI is needed by people. Delhi High Court said that we have to remove the negative part of technology and keep the positive part. Referring to the increase in false threats about bombs being planted in planes, the court wanted to know whether the government has constituted a committee of experts in this regard and if yes, who are its members. The bench further said about this that we want clear answers and there must be a serious committee for deepfakes.

Additional Solicitor General, representing the Centre, said the Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology is looking into the issue. The lawyer appearing for one of the petitioners argued that many countries have made laws on this issue and India has lagged far behind in this matter. He said most 'deepfakes' are related to women and authorities are unable to resolve the issue. The court gave the Center three weeks to file the status report and scheduled the hearing for November 21.
