India’s all-rounder Deepti Sharma became the highest wicket-taker in women’s T20Is after taking five wickets against Pakistan in the Women in Blue’s 2026 T20 World Cup campaign opener at Edgbaston.
She surpassed Thailand left-arm spinner Thipatcha Putthawong, who has taken 165 wickets in the shortest format of the game. Deepti has taken 166 scalps at an average of 19.42 with an economy rate of 6.29. Her spell of 5/10 was the third-best figures in the history of the tournament.
Deepti dismissed Gull Feroza, who was caught at the backward point. In her next over, Deepti got rid of Ayesha Zafar, who was caught by Smriti Mandhana at short fine leg. She returned to finish Pakistan’s innings, removing Aliya Riaz, whose catch went to Jemimah Rodrigues at deep midwicket.
Tasmia Rubab was her fourth scalp of the match while she completed her five-for by sending back Nashra Sandhu, who gave a simple catch to Harmanpreet Kaur.
Deepti was named the Player of the Match. “I am grateful. I like this kind of wicket. Credit goes to the team. Hanuman Ji is great. The wicket was turning, so I varied my pace in every over,” she said.
“I knew that bowling slower would help, and I believed in myself. I bowled in the right areas. I was not thinking about the wickets. I was ready to perform whenever my team needed me. This is how I play and bowl,” she added.
