Delhi Capitals appoint Jemimah Rodrigues skipper ahead of WPL 2026
New Delhi: Delhi Capitals have appointed Indian batter Jemimah Rodrigues skipper ahead of the 2026 Women’s Premier League (WPL) season. Rodrigues was key member of Indian team’s squad which won the ICC women’s World Cup this year.
The 25-year-old batter played a key role in the semifinal clash against Australia, scoring an unbeaten 127 in a record chase of 339 against the side. After being named as skipper for the Capitals, the Indian woman player said that it is absolute honour for her to become the captain of the franchise and she feels grateful to the owners and other staff members for the same.
WPL holds a special place in heart: Rodrigues
The sensational player further added that it has been a dream year for her and the entire side especially the World Cup triumph, which took them to the world stage. Speaking about the WPL, she said that the tournament holds a special place in her heart since its inception.
‘It is an absolute honour to be named captain of the Delhi Capitals, and I am deeply grateful to the owners and the support staff for placing their faith in me to lead this team,’ Rodrigues said in a release.
‘It has truly been a dream year for me and my family, winning the World Cup and now being entrusted with this wonderful opportunity at a franchise that has held a very special place in my heart since the very first season of the WPL, she added.
Meanwhile, Rodrigues, who happened to be Delhi’s first pick in the inaugural auction, has till now featured in 27 WPL matches scoring 507 runs at an impressive strike rater of almost 140. This includes her appearances in all three final games across the league’s three seasons from the first edition in 2023.
The Indian batter replaces Meg Lanning as the Delhi Capital’s captain after the franchise released the former Australia skipper ahead of the auction last month. The WPL 2026 will be the fourth edition of the league and the Capitals will be trying their luck for the trophy this season after ending up as runners up in all the previous three seasons.
In the history of the tournament, Rodrigues has featured in 113 T20I matches scoring 2444 runs which includes four half-centuries as well at an average of close to 31. Meanwhile, Delhi Capitals will take on Mumbai Indians in their opening match of the league on January 10 in Navi Mumbai.
