Preparation to stop electricity subsidy of closed houses, Delhi government is making a plan
Delhi government is working on a new plan to control the increasing expenditure on electricity subsidy in the capital. Under this, subsidy to dormant electricity consumers can be stopped. In such a situation, consumers will have to pay the fixed charge on electricity connection themselves., even if they 200 Even if the unit comes under the ambit of free electricity scheme.
In fact, under the current system in Delhi, consumers get zero bill for electricity consumption up to 200 units. But the government fears that many such connections remain under subsidy, where actual consumption is not taking place.
Decision can be taken on electricity subsidy
According to official sources, analysis of electricity bills has revealed that there are three to four months in a year when consumption on thousands of electricity connections is almost negligible. Despite electricity not being used on such connections, the government continues to pay fixed charges to the power companies under subsidy. According to current data, the number of such inactive consumers is high in the winter season, when many houses remain closed for long periods and electricity consumption becomes extremely low. There are a total of more than 62 lakh electricity consumers in Delhi. Of these, about 58.72 lakh consumers got the benefit of electricity subsidy in December 2025.

Investigation has also revealed that in order to avail the benefit of electricity subsidy, several electricity connections have been taken in different names in some houses. The result of this is that between 2020 and 2025, an increase of more than 12 lakh was recorded in the number of electricity consumers, whereas the number of water consumers did not increase that much during the same period.

Minimum electricity unit cost will also be fixed
According to officials, the number of dormant electricity consumers may increase or decrease every month. Therefore, the government is considering setting a limit on minimum electricity unit expenditure to identify such consumers. If any connection consumes less electricity than the prescribed limit, the subsidy for that connection can be terminated. Investigation has also revealed that in some houses, multiple connections have been taken in different names to avail the benefit of electricity subsidy. For this reason, between 2020 and 2025, an increase of more than 12 lakh was recorded in the number of electricity consumers, whereas the number of water consumers did not increase that much. At present there are more than 62 lakh electricity consumers in Delhi and in December 2025, about 58.72 lakh consumers had got the benefit of subsidy.
