Delhi High Court’s strict comment on weekly markets, said – chaos will not work, it is necessary to bring in rules
Delhi High Court has made strong remarks regarding the weekly markets organized in the capital. The court clearly said that these markets cannot become a security and convenience crisis for the local residents, hence it is necessary to bring them within the ambit of the rules. This comment was made by the bench of Justice Pratibha Singh and Justice Madhu Jain while hearing a petition. The petition was filed by a resident of Uttam Nagar, demanding removal of the weekly market held on Mondays.
Petitioner Ved Prakash told the court that during the establishment of the market, there is heavy encroachment in the area, due to which the roads get jammed and the local people have to face serious problems. He also presented some photographs in the court to support his claims. After observing the photographs, the court observed that there is a clear difference in the condition of the area between the market day and normal days. This indicates that there is a lack of arrangements during the weekly market.
Rules will have to be made to set up the market
The court clarified that there should be a clear determination of how many vendors there will be in the weekly markets and how much space they will occupy. This will not only improve the system but will also reduce the inconvenience to local residents. During the hearing, the court was told by the MCD that the Delhi government is preparing a detailed plan to solve this problem. Under this scheme, measures will be taken to make the operations of weekly markets more organized and controlled.
MCD has been directed to present a detailed report of its proposed plan in the court. The next hearing of this case will now be on August 6. The court clarified that complete closure of weekly markets is not a solution, but it is necessary to operate them systematically and under rules. The court believes that with proper regulation, the problems faced by the local people can be reduced, and the livelihood of small traders will also not be affected. During the hearing it also came to light that the Delhi government is preparing a comprehensive plan to solve this problem, which can be implemented soon.
