Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Sunday said that Delhi is not just a city, but it is a living civilization, which is being shaped by continuous cultural evolution from Indraprastha of Mahabharata to a modern democratic place. Rekha Gupta made this comment at the 20th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage held at the Red Fort complex in the capital.

He said India’s intangible cultural heritage, spanning from the Vedas, Upanishads and Yoga to festivals, rituals and performing arts, thrives not in museums but in the everyday lives of its people.

CM Rekha Gupta said that due to rapid modernization, climate change, migration and digital transformation, conservation of intangible heritage has become more important than ever. He said India’s recent emphasis on promoting traditional knowledge systems and cultural practices at global forums reflects Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of strengthening the country’s cultural roots and civilizational identity.

The 20th session of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Committee on Cultural Heritage is going to be organized at the Red Fort from today to 13 December. India is hosting this important conference for the first time, in which about one thousand delegates from more than 180 countries will participate. The Chief Minister wants the foreign guests to experience not only the conference but also the cultural light of Old Delhi, its food and heritage.

CM Rekha Gupta has directed SRDC, PWD and MCD to jointly conduct a large-scale cleaning and beautification campaign in the area.
