Delhi Metro will be upgraded, preparations to add luxury coaches soon, passengers will get comfortable travel
To deal with the challenge of increasing pollution and traffic in the capital Delhi, preparations are being made to upgrade the metro service in a new way. With the aim of reducing dependence on private vehicles, the Central Government has given a big signal towards making the Metro more comfortable and attractive. Under this scheme, luxury coaches will soon be added to the six-coach trains of Delhi Metro, so that passengers can get better facilities and more people make Metro their commuting option.
In these luxury coaches, passengers will experience comfortable office cabin-like seating along with state-of-the-art facilities. However, to avail this facility, passengers will have to pay an additional fee over the normal fare, the amount of which has not been decided at present. The government says that the additional income from luxury coaches will be used to further improve the facilities for common passengers in the Metro.
Double efforts to reduce pollution and traffic
Union Energy and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal gave information about this scheme during a public meeting organized in Nehru Nagar, Lajpat Nagar. He said that by making Metro more convenient and attractive, people will prefer public transport instead of private vehicles. According to the minister, this will reduce the number of vehicles on the roads, reduce smoke emissions and make it easier to control air pollution.
Role of Metro and pace of expansion
Union Minister Manohar Lal said that about 35 lakh people use Delhi Metro every day and there are about 65 lakh journeys every day. He said that if there were no facilities like Metro, the pollution situation in Delhi today would have been much more serious. The minister also said that the capital has been grappling with several urban problems for the last two decades, including challenges in roads, transport and waste management. To solve these problems, the Urban Development Ministry is holding meetings with the Delhi Government every month.
India’s global leap in metro network
At present, more than 400 km long metro network is operating in Delhi-NCR. The government claims that soon Delhi will leave Chicago behind in terms of having the longest metro lines at a single location. At present, a total of 1,100 kilometers of metro lines are operational across the country, while construction work of 800 kilometers length is going on. As soon as 400 kilometers of these new lines are completed, India will leave America behind in terms of having the largest metro network in a single country.
