Delhi News: There will be no ban on sale and consumption of tobacco products near temples. Delhi High Court rejected a PIL seeking ban on sale and consumption of tobacco products near temples. The case was heard by the division bench of Delhi High Court's Acting Chief Justice Vibhu Bakhru and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela. The bench said, 'We do not consider it appropriate to accept this petition as a public interest litigation.'

What did the High Court say

According to a report, the court said, 'Needless to say that if the concerned authorities find any violation of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce Act 2003) or any rule made thereunder, So the authorities are required to take necessary action as per law.

Who filed the PIL

The PIL seeking ban on sale and consumption of tobacco products near temples was filed by Abhimanyu Sharma, a priest of a temple. He had said in the PIL that

  • It is necessary to ban the sale of cigarettes and tobacco products near temples and other religious places.
  • Instructions should be issued to ensure that people dealing in tobacco products do not sell any other item.
  • The petition sought direction to the authorities to take appropriate steps in the matter as per the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement-Regulation of Trade and Commerce) Act 2003.
