Delhi Police arrest AAP MLA Naresh Balyan in extortion case; party calls it ‘illegal’
New Delhi: AAP leader and Uttam Nagar MLA Naresh Balyan was on Saturday arrested by Delhi Police. According to reports, his arrest is linked to an extortion case from 2023. The MLA was called to the Delhi Police’s Crime Branch office in R K Puram for questioning and was later arrested.
The Aam Aadmi Party defended Balyan, claiming that his arrest was illegal. The MLA had refuted the BJP’s allegations and said he would lodge police cases against those who “spread lies” about him.
BJP accuses Balyan of being involved in extortion activities
The development occurred shortly after the BJP accused Balyan of being involved in extortion activities and questioned why AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal had not taken any action against him.
According to a police official quoted by news agency PTI, an audio clip allegedly featuring a conversation between Balyan and gangster Kapil Sangwan, who is reportedly based abroad, surfaced on social media. The conversation reportedly discussed extorting money from businessmen. The police are conducting further investigations and interrogations in the matter.
Balyan arrested as part of this conspiracy
AAP MP Sanjay Singh claimed that since Arvind Kejriwal began highlighting issues of law and order and rising crime in Delhi, the BJP and the central government have been “conspiring against and harassing” AAP leaders. He alleged that “Balyan has been arrested as part of this conspiracy, and the charges against him are baseless.”
Singh further accused BJP leaders of using a fabricated audio clip in violation of a High Court order. He also stated that Balyan himself had lodged a police complaint regarding multiple threats he had received from gangster Kapil Sangwan.
