Female sub-inspector of Delhi Police arrested, had demanded bribe of Rs 15 thousand from rape victim’s mother
The Vigilance Branch of Delhi Police caught a woman sub-inspector posted at Sangam Vihar police station red-handed while taking a bribe of Rs 15,000 from the mother of a rape victim. It is alleged that the investigating officer of the rape case, SI Namita, had demanded money from the victim’s mother in exchange for taking action in the case. After receiving the complaint, the Vigilance team laid a trap and arrested SI Namita. It is said that this amount was asked to influence the case. At present, the Vigilance Branch is further investigating the matter.
The Vigilance Branch of Delhi Police caught Namita, a female sub-inspector posted at Sangam Vihar police station, red handed while taking a bribe of Rs 15,000 from the mother of a rape victim. The case is of Sangam Vihar area, where a young man had raped a teenage girl. The investigation of this case was handed over to SI Namita of the year 2019 batch. According to vigilance officials, it was alleged in the complaint that SI Namita had demanded the entire amount of Rs 2 lakh from the victim’s mother. He had also threatened to weaken the investigation if the bribe was not paid. After confirming the complaint, Vigilance set a trap and arrested the SI while taking Rs 15,000. The Vigilance Branch is now conducting a detailed investigation into the matter.
The victim’s mother lodged a complaint of demanding bribe with the Vigilance Branch, after which the team made a trap plan. Under the scheme, the complainant approached the SI to give Rs 15,000 as the first installment. As soon as she was handing over the bribe amount at the police station, the Vigilance team immediately raided and caught SI Namita on the spot.
Case registered under Anti Corruption Act
According to the report, a case has been registered under Section 7 of the Anti Corruption Act. The accused SI was produced in the court and sent to judicial custody. Vigilance officials are now also probing whether he had made similar demands for bribe in other cases also. “Citizens are requested to report any case of demanding bribe by police personnel. Complaints can be made on vigilance helpline 1064,” an official said.
Another serious case came to light in July
In July also, a similar major case had come to light in Paschim Vihar of Outer Delhi. In that incident, four policemen, including a woman sub-inspector, were arrested for kidnapping a businessman and demanding a ransom of Rs 20 lakh. This case had raised serious questions on the issues of corruption and abuse in the police department.
