Delhi riots accused Sharjeel Imam out of jail after 6 years, granted interim bail

Delhi court has granted interim bail of 10 days to Sharjeel Imam after 6 years of jail sentence. Some family members came to pick him up amid drizzling rain. Imam did not answer media questions, But as soon as he sat in the car, he smiled and made a victory sign to express his happiness. Delhi court has granted 10 days interim bail to Sharjeel Imam to attend a family function in the case related to 9 March 2020 Delhi riots.

Under bail, he has to agree to several conditions and can only meet friends, relatives and family members. Cannot go anywhere other than the places mentioned in the petition. Use of social media will be completely prohibited. After this decision, Imam was allowed to come out of Tihar Jail, but clear limits have been placed on him so that there is no violation during the bail.

In the court of Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai, Sharjeel Imam had sought six weeks’ relief to attend his brother’s wedding and spend time with the family during the Eid festival. While giving its verdict on this, the court gave interim bail of 10 days to the Imam and also imposed some conditions that the Imam will have to deposit a personal bond of Rs 50,000. Two sureties of the same amount will have to be presented. Bail will be limited to attending family functions only. Brother’s marriage is on March 25, so the court has decided these measures to ensure the period of relief and safety.

After the completion of the formalities, Sharjeel Imam came out of Tihar Jail on Friday. Some of his family members came to pick him up amid drizzling rain. Under the bail, Sharjeel Imam will also have to accept some additional conditions:

He cannot have any contact with any witness or person related to the case.

They will have to give their mobile number to the investigating officer of the case.

Imam will again have to surrender before the jail authorities on the evening of 30 March.

Relief was sought for 6 weeks

Sharjeel Imam had sought interim bail of six weeks from March 15 to April 26 to attend his brother’s wedding, but the court granted bail for only 10 days. Imam is an accused in cases related to the February 2020 riots in north-east Delhi. 53 people were killed and more than 700 were injured in that violence. These riots broke out during widespread protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

According to the police, Sharjeel Imam allegedly created and operated a WhatsApp group of JNU Muslim students, which served as a coordination mechanism for identification and mobilization of protest sites. Police alleged that Imam participated in secret meetings held in Jangpura, where Chakka Jam and strategies to intensify the protests were discussed. His alleged influence was not limited to Delhi alone; He traveled to Aligarh and other places and played the role of a public organizer and thinker.

Additionally, police said Imam played a decisive role in building and maintaining the Shaheen Bagh protest site, which turned into a long, round-the-clock protest on a major road. The police allege that their role was basic and preparatory, and physical presence at the site of violence was not necessary once the planning had begun.
