Delhi Varanasi High Speed Rail To Transform Sarai Kale Khan Hub

Sarai Kale Khan, already recognised as the Capital’s first multimodal transport hub, will now serve as the Delhi terminal for the upcoming Delhi Varanasi High Speed Rail. Senior officials confirmed that authorities will amend the Influence Zone Plan to integrate the proposed high-speed rail station into the Nizamuddin–Sarai Kale Khan Multimodal Transit Hub framework

The Delhi Varanasi High Speed Rail corridor is among the seven new bullet train projects announced in the Union Budget 2026–27. Spanning nearly 813 kilometres, the project aims to connect Delhi with Varanasi while linking major cities along the route. The corridor is expected to significantly reduce travel time and strengthen economic and regional connectivity.

Influence Zone Plan To Be Updated

A senior government official said a high-powered committee is reviewing the Influence Zone Plan with respect to the transit-oriented development node of the Nizamuddin–Sarai Kale Khan hub. Earlier, the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) had shared projected ridership figures, alignment plans, and multimodal integration data. However, as the corridor had not received central sanction at that stage, the proposal was not incorporated into the influence zone framework.

Now that the Delhi Varanasi High Speed Rail has been prioritised, the plan will be amended to ensure seamless integration with railways, metro services, and bus connectivity. Officials have also shared detailed influence zone inputs with NHSRCL to facilitate corridor-level planning.

Station Near Nizamuddin

Another official involved in the planning process said that the high-speed rail station will come up near Sarai Kale Khan and Nizamuddin railway stations. NHSRCL will update its Detailed Project Report based on ground realities and submit revised details accordingly.

NHSRCL, incorporated in 2016, functions as the special purpose vehicle responsible for financing, constructing, maintaining, and managing India’s high-speed rail corridors.

The addition of the Delhi Varanasi High Speed Rail terminal is expected to elevate Sarai Kale Khan into a mega transport gateway for northern India, strengthening Delhi’s role as a national connectivity hub.
