Delhi Will Spend Rs 48,000 Crore For Adding 97 Kms Of Metro Line, 65 New Stations
Delhi’s Metro network is set for a massive expansion as the Delhi government unveiled Phase V(B) of the Delhi Metro project. The ambitious plan includes:
- 97 km of new Metro lines
- 65 new stations
- Seven new corridors
- Estimated investment of ₹48,204 crore
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced the expansion during the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation’s 32nd Foundation Day event. The project is aimed at improving connectivity in outer Delhi and rapidly developing residential zones that currently lack efficient Metro access.
Four Priority Corridors Targeted By 2029
According to officials, four priority corridors are expected to be completed by 2029. The Delhi government has directed the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to prepare revised Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) separately for priority and non-priority routes.
The expansion is being planned under Delhi Metro Phase V(B), which focuses heavily on improving connectivity in outer and less-served areas of the city.
Key Metro Corridors Planned
1. Dhansa Bus Stand To Nangloi Corridor
The first corridor will connect Dhansa Bus Stand in Najafgarh to Nangloi.
Key details:
- Length: 11.859 km
- Fully elevated route
- 9 stations planned
- Interchange with:
- Gray Line at Dhansa Bus Stand
- Green Line and Nangloi
This corridor is expected to improve connectivity for western Delhi and Najafgarh regions.
2. Central Secretariat To Kishangarh Corridor
The second major corridor will run between Central Secretariat and Kishangarh.
Project highlights:
- Length: 15.969 km
- Around 13.7 km underground
- 10 stations planned
- Mostly underground alignment
The route is expected to improve access to South Delhi and airport-linked regions.
More Corridors Expected Across Outer Delhi
While detailed alignments for all seven corridors are still being finalized, officials say the project is designed to:
- Expand Metro reach into outer Delhi
- Reduce road congestion
- Improve last-mile connectivity
- Support future urban growth
- Strengthen integration with buses and feeder services
The plan also aims to reduce travel time between outer residential zones and central commercial districts.
Delhi Metro’s Network Will Expand Significantly
Once completed, the new expansion will substantially increase Delhi Metro’s already massive network size.
Delhi Metro Phase IV projects are already under construction, including:
- Golden Line corridors
- Janakpuri West–RK Ashram route
- Aerocity–Tughlakabad corridor
- Lajpat Nagar–Saket G Block extension
The addition of Phase V(B) could push Delhi Metro closer toward becoming one of the world’s largest urban Metro systems.
Focus On Outer Delhi And Developing Zones
Officials say the biggest focus of the expansion is outer Delhi, where public transport demand has increased rapidly due to:
- Population growth
- New housing developments
- Expanding urban boundaries
- Rising traffic congestion
Several underserved areas currently dependent on buses and road transport may receive direct Metro connectivity for the first time.
DPRs Await Further Approvals
The Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for the new corridors have reportedly been prepared and submitted for approvals. The project still requires:
- Central government approval
- Financial clearances
- Cabinet nod for final implementation
Once approvals are finalized, construction work on the new Phase V(B) routes is expected to begin in stages.
Delhi Metro Continues Rapid Expansion
Delhi Metro has already crossed 450 km of operational and under-construction network length across multiple phases. The system remains one of India’s largest urban infrastructure projects and continues expanding toward NCR regions including:
- Noida
- Greater Noida
- Ghaziabad
- Gurugram
- Meerut through Namo Bharat connectivity
