‘Delhi’s air is bad’, player withdrew his name and was fined $5000

Danish player Anders Antonsen, who has made his mark in the badminton world, is not participating in the India Open Super 750 badminton tournament. He informed about his decision on his Instagram account and also explained the reason behind his decision. Even before this, he had not come to India twice to participate in this tournament. Antonson has attributed this to Delhi’s pollution.

He wrote on social media, ‘Many people want to know why I withdrew from the India Open for the third consecutive year. At present the pollution level in Delhi is very serious and I do not think that a badminton tournament should be organized there in such a situation. I hope that in the summer, when the World Championship will be held in Delhi, the conditions will be better.

What do the rules say?

As per BWF’s player commitment rules, top committed players are required to participate in World Tour 750, World Tour 1,000 and World Tour Finals. If a player withdraws from the tournament without injury or medical exemption, a heavy fine can be imposed on that player. Under this rule, BWF has fined Antonson.
