Delhi 2026-27 budget may be presented in the third week of March, focus will be on electricity and water

Rekha Gupta-led Delhi government is likely to present the annual budget for financial year 2026–27 in the third week of March. Preparations regarding the budget have intensified and the phase of brainstorming with various departments is about to begin. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta is likely to start important meetings with senior officials of the finance and planning departments from Monday. These meetings are likely to decide budget priorities, review major schemes and discuss new proposals. According to sources, this time the budget may have a special focus on basic issues like electricity and water, so that announcements can be made that provide relief to the common people. Besides, big provisions are also expected to be made for schemes related to infrastructure, education, health and social welfare.

Delhi government officials said on Saturday that the distribution of funds and priority areas for various departments will be decided in the meetings to be held regarding the annual budget for the financial year 2026–27. The objective of these meetings is to ensure that the major schemes of the government and important sectors related to the public get adequate resources. An official said that detailed discussions on preparing the budget outline for the next financial year will begin from next week. During this, department-wise proposals, estimation of expenditure and possibilities of new schemes will be considered.

Focus will be on roads and water

This time in the 2026–27 budget of the Delhi government, there is likely to be a special emphasis on big projects, expansion of roads and water infrastructure. Along with this, priority will also be given to health, education, public transport, pollution control measures and various welfare services, so that the common people can get direct benefits by improving urban facilities. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government, which came to power last year, has recently completed one year in office and this budget is considered to set the policy direction for its second year.

In the financial year 2025–26, the government had presented a budget of Rs 1 lakh crore, which was a record budget in the history of Delhi at that time. In that budget also, special focus was placed on expansion of health services, improvement in education system, transport infrastructure and social welfare schemes.

Budget will be more than Rs 1 lakh crore

The Delhi government’s 2026–27 budget may be slightly larger than the Rs 1 lakh crore allocation for 2025–26, according to officials. This is in line with the trend of previous years, in which the capital budget size has been increasing gradually every year. The main reason for the increase in the budget is believed to be the increase in tax collection and other government revenues as well as higher spending on infrastructure. However, the government has indicated that along with increasing expenditure, financial discipline will also be maintained, so that debt and deficit remain under control. At present, the actual size of the budget and how much allocation will be given to which sector will become clear only after the budget is officially presented.

As part of the preparations for the budget for 2026–27, the Delhi government had held meetings with various departments at the beginning of the year to assess how much of the funds allocated in the current financial year were utilized and which areas required additional funds. According to sources, the budget session of Delhi Assembly is likely to be held in March. Normally the budget session is the first session of the year, but this time it will be the second session of 2026, because the winter session of the Assembly has already concluded in January.
