Delhi’s Minto Bridge will not be filled with water during monsoon, PWD’s master action plan ready
To permanently solve the problem of severe waterlogging at Minto Bridge during monsoon for the last several years, PWD has prepared a Master Action Plan to develop a drainage system. Under this scheme, water drainage will be improved in many areas of Old Delhi. These include major areas. Due to lack of proper management of drainage during monsoon in these areas like Ajmeri Gate, Paharganj, Sita Road, Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Marg, JLN Marg, water reaches Minto Bridge, causing serious waterlogging during the rainy season.
To get rid of the problem of severe waterlogging on Minto Bridge during monsoon forever, PWD has prepared a Drainage Development Plan for Old Delhi. It is estimated that about Rs 29.14 crore will be spent on this scheme. A deadline of three months has been set to complete the work quickly. This plan has been developed to improve water drainage in old and waterlogged areas and prevent jams and waterlogging on Minto Bridge during rains.
Water will be drained from the drain
According to PWD officials, it is difficult for rain water to drain out on time in Old Delhi because the area is densely populated and developing a drainage system is challenging. Therefore, the department has prepared an action plan to develop drainage system on those roads of Old Delhi where drainage of water is possible.
Features of the scheme:
New technology drains will be built on the roadside.
There will be no need for extensive construction to construct the drain.
Where small drains are already made, a larger U-shaped concrete drain will be installed.
The depth and width of the new drain will be greater than the old drain, which will increase the water drainage capacity.
Under this master plan prepared by PWD, drainage system will be developed in major areas of Old Delhi. The estimated expenses are as follows:
Area/Road Expenses (in Rs.)
Ajmeri Gate to Sita Road 3,76,85,806
JLN Marg to Kamala Market Rotary Aruna Asaf Ali Road 4,31,89,592
Zorawar Singh Marg – Pul Meethai – Gokhale Road 1,42,02,826
SPM Marg – Kauriya Bridge – Chhatta Rail Bridge 4,09,86,319
Kashmere Gate Metro Station – Ring Road 2,96,78,784
Ranjit Singh Marg 2,96,78,784
Boulevard Road – St. Stephen’s Hospital – Bhagwan Das Chowk 9,65,71,925
Total estimated cost: Approximately Rs 29.14 crore.
PWD has decided to develop separate drainage systems from Mukherjee Road in Old Delhi to Chhatta Rail Bridge, Zorawar Singh Marg to Pul Meethai and Pul Meethai to Gokhale Road, Kamla Market Roundabout to Aruna Asaf Ali Road, and Kashmere Gate Metro Station to Ring Road. The objective of this scheme is to permanently eliminate the problem of waterlogging during monsoon on all these major routes.
Drainage system will be developed on these roads
PWD has prepared a plan to develop new drainage systems on several major routes of Old Delhi and New Delhi to reduce the pressure of rain water below Minto Bridge. Under the plan, new and more efficient drainage will be provided at all these places from Ajmeri Gate to Sita Road (from Bhavabhuti Marg to Ramlila Maidan), from JLN Marg to Delhi Gate via Aruna Asaf Ali Road (near MCD Headquarters, Civic Centre), from Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Road to Chhatta Rail Bridge, from Zorawar Singh Marg to Pul Mithai and from Pul Mithai to Gokhale Road, from Kamla Market Roundabout to Aruna Asaf Ali Road, from Kashmere Gate Metro Station to Ring Road. The system will be constructed so that the problem of waterlogging during monsoon can be permanently eliminated. The new drainage will have more width and depth than the old drains, due to which the drainage of water will be faster and better.
