Delhi’s security increased before Christmas and New Year, soldiers deployed in border areas
Delhi. Ahead of Christmas and New Year, Delhi Police has made tight security arrangements and deployed around 20,000 police and paramilitary personnel to maintain law and order. An official gave this information on Tuesday. Police deployment has also been increased in the border areas of the national capital.
Delhi’s borders are with Uttar Pradesh and Haryana which is close to Rajasthan. A large number of people from these states are expected to come to the city to celebrate the New Year. The official said around 20,000 police personnel, including traffic and paramilitary forces, would be deployed at the spot to prevent hooliganism and violation of traffic rules.
The official said that additional checkpoints will be built on the borders and paramilitary forces will be deployed to deal with possible disturbance by people from neighboring states. He said that in view of Christmas, police forces have been deployed at more than 10 places and security checks will be further tightened.
Police will also be deployed at 15 more places in Delhi where vehicles enter the national capital. “The traffic police have already made plans to deal with motorcycle stunts and drunken driving. Additional forces will be deployed from various police stations to assist the traffic police,” a senior police officer said.
The officer said that police personnel will be deployed according to shifts. Station House Officers (SHOs) have been ordered to be present on the roads with their teams to maintain law and order on Christmas and New Year eve. If anyone is found indulging in stunt-like activities, the teams will immediately seize the two or four-wheelers.
The official said that strict action will be ensured. “Our teams are checking bus stands, railway stations, hotels, dharamshalas, night shelters and other places to ascertain whether any person is staying without proper documents. We have already launched a special drive to identify people living illegally in the national capital,” he said.
Delhi Traffic Police said that their main focus will be on maintaining vehicular movement around Connaught Place, Hauz Khas, markets and malls. In Connaught Place, only vehicles with valid stickers will be allowed to enter the Inner Circle area. The official said that these stickers will be distributed by Delhi Police.
He said that due to huge crowd gathering at India Gate to celebrate New Year, additional force will be deployed there. Blocks will be set up in several areas across the city, especially near malls and party areas. The official said that a campaign will also be launched against those who drink and drive and those who violate the rules will be fined. He said that police personnel will also be deployed around the hotels.
