Three men were arrested for beating a deliveryman in Da Nang to death after the latter tried to collect VND375,000 ($14.97) for a package.
Tran Van Minh Toan, Nguyen Thanh Tung and Tran Hoang Thien were arrested by police of Hoa Vang District on Thursday to be investigated for beating Tran Thanh, 31, to death.
Thanh delivered a package of goods, including towels and carpets, worth VND375,000 to a house on Jan. 17.
As he did not receive payment for the package, he came back to the house at around 11 p.m. the same day to ask for the money, but the registered customer, Thao, was not present at the time.
Thanh stayed back to wait for Thao.
According to his company’s policy, Thanh was required to secure payment to earn his VND4,000 delivery commission.
He made various phone calls to Thao to demand the payment and received a negative rating on the delivery app, potentially resulting in a VND500,000 fine and compensation for the unpaid goods.
When Thao later returned with her two friends, Toan and Tung, a verbal confrontation ensued between Thanh and Thao, which escalated when Toan and Tung assaulted Thanh, striking him in the head and body.
Thien, Thao’s brother, joined in, beating Thanh with his hands and a motorbike helmet.
After the assault, Thanh returned home but experienced breathing difficulties around 0:30 a.m. on Jan. 18. Despite his family’s efforts to call medical assistance, Thanh succumbed to his injuries. An autopsy revealed multiple bruises on his body.
