Demand to remove tax on gold jewelery intensifies discussion on Nepal’s policy
New Delhi . Nepal is trying to give a new direction to its tourism economy and in this sequence, the country’s former Finance Minister Surendra Pandey has put forward a new and popular suggestion. Speaking at an event in Kathmandu, he said Nepal should consider abolishing the tax on gold jewelery to attract Indian tourists, especially wedding ceremonies.
Pandey believes that if the Nepal government takes this step, the country can be developed as a big “wedding destination”. Through tourists coming from a huge market like India, Nepal can not only promote tourism but can also strengthen hotel, travel and local business.
He also said that the simpler the rules and procedures in Nepal, the more foreign tourists will be attracted. There is also a need to simplify procedures at the borders and simplify entry of vehicles, especially for Indian travellers.
The former finance minister suggested that Nepal should prepare big tourism packages keeping in mind big countries like India and China. He says that the number of tourists coming from these countries is very high and by adopting the right strategy, Nepal can strengthen its economic position.
At present, foreign travelers are allowed to bring limited quantity of gold and silver jewelery into Nepal without customs duty, but with the condition that they should be taken back after personal use. The demand to make this system more flexible is now increasing.
According to experts, Nepal is already a popular tourist destination due to its natural beauty, mountains, religious sites and cultural heritage. Millions of people from India visit Nepal every year. In such a situation, if the rules are relaxed, it can prove to be a big game changer for the tourism sector of the country.
This suggestion of Surendra Pandey is being seen as a new experiment in Nepal’s economic strategy, which can further strengthen India-Nepal tourism relations in the coming times.
