Denmark Elections: Will Frederiksen become PM again after the dispute with Trump over Greenland? Know what are the big issues
Trump Greenland Denmark Issue: The voting process for the election of the new parliament has started in the Scandinavian country Denmark today, Tuesday 24 March 2026. Current Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen is trying to return to power for the third consecutive time through this election.
In Denmark, these elections are being held several months ahead of schedule. Political analysts believe that the Prime Minister has taken this step to capitalize on his image after the diplomatic dispute with US President Donald Trump over the future of Greenland.
Greenland crisis and dispute with Trump
Prime Minister Frederiksen had called for elections in February itself. The main reason behind this was the tension that arose with America regarding Greenland when President Trump expressed his desire for American control over this semi-autonomous region. Frederickson strongly opposed this proposal, which earned him international recognition as a strong leader. Although now the ice in the relations between America and Denmark has melted a bit and both sides are holding technical talks regarding Arctic security, but this issue is still under discussion in the electoral arena.
inflation and migration
Even though Frederickson has made inroads on international issues, he is facing tough challenges on the domestic front. During his second term, the cost of living in Denmark has increased significantly, putting a heavy burden on the pockets of ordinary citizens. During the election campaign, opposition parties have fiercely cornered the government on issues like pension schemes and the proposed wealth tax.
Additionally, migration policy has been a very sensitive part of this election. PM Frederiksen has expressed fear of a new wave of refugees coming to Europe due to the Iran war. In view of this, his government imposed an ’emergency brake’ on asylum seekers. Strict laws have been proposed such as imposition of penalties and immediate deportation of foreigners involved in serious crimes.
Coalition politics and main rivals
Nearly 4.3 million voters are casting their franchise in Denmark’s 179-seat parliament. Due to the proportional representation system here, it is very difficult for any one party to get a clear majority, due to which after the elections there are often long negotiations to form a coalition.

Frederiksen is facing tough competition from his own cabinet, Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen, and Liberal Alliance youth leader Alex Vanopschlag. Vannopslagh is a supporter of low taxes and nuclear energy, although some controversies related to his past may come in the way of his popularity. In this triangular contest, it will be interesting to see whether Frederiksen is able to retain her power or there will be a change of power in Denmark.
