Disappointment for Indian shuttlers continue on day two

Disappointment for India continued on the second day of the 2024 Denmark Open, with all four Indian fixtures ending up in defeat, on Wednesday.

So far, apart from PV Sindhu, none of the other Indian shuttlers have managed to win a game at the Denmark Open.

To start the day, women’s doubles pair Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand went up against Tan Pearly and Thinaah Muralitharan.

After seemingly looking lost at the halfway mark of game one, the Indian pair picked up pace and produced high-quality badminton to win the first game 21-19.

They continued with the same momentum in the second game and were looking very good at 17-17 when Tan Pearly had to take a break to attend to her blistered foot.

Once back, the Malaysian duo took the game by storm, winning four points on the trot and making it 1-1, taking the game to the decider.

In the decider, the Indians could not match the intensity of the Malaysians, who after an initial hiccup, picked up pace and rode out the game rather comfortably, winning 21-15.

In almost a similar fashion, India’s Sumeet Reddy and Sikki Reddy faced Canada’s Kevin Lee and Eliana Zhang in the first round of the mixed doubles category.

After winning the first game 22-20, the Indian duo were looking good but faltered towards the end of game two, losing it 19-21.

They recovered well in the decider, and at 18-15, were all set to win the match but once again, the jitters got to the Indian pair as Kevin and Eliana fought back, forcing the match into a tiebreaker and eventually winning it 24-22.

Satish Kumar lost his men’s singles tie against Chinese Taipei’s Su Li Yang 1-2 (15-21, 21-17, 20-22).

Unnati Hooda faced Laurie Lam in the women’s singles and in the first game, Laurie won convincingly 21-15, but Unnati stormed back in game two, winning it 21-13 and making it 1-1.

Laurie once again dominated in game three and raced to a 14-7 lead, but Unnati fought back remarkably, making it 16-16, since then, a string of unforced errors handed Laurie the victory.

PV Sindhu will be in action tomorrow in the round of 16, set to face China’s Han Yue in the women’s singles.
