PV Sindhu defeats Han Yue in a three game thriller

Indian shuttler PV Sindhu advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2024 Denmark Open Super 750, defeating China’s Han Yue in the round of 16, on Thursday.

In a three game thriller that lasted over an hour, the two-time Olympic medalist from India triumphed over the Chinese, who was seeded fourth in this tournament.

This is Sindhu’s seventh win against Han Yue in eight outings, and Han Yue remains the only opponent inside the top10 world ranking to have been defeated by Sindhu in the past year, with the Indian winning her earlier in the year as well.

The first game was won by Han Yue 21-18, but Sindhu was the better of the two despite losing the first game.

The reason for her defeat was largely down to unforced errors from the Indian.

Sindhu came roaring back in game two, comfortably winning it 21-12 and headed into the decider with odds in her favor.

The decider once again saw Sindhu commit way too many mistakes in the first half, which meant at the interval, Han Yue had a four point lead at 11-7.

But since the interval, Sindhu picked up pace and played superbly, moving Han Yue all over the court and displayed excellent skill.

At 16-16, Sindhu took control and thanks to a five-point streak, took the third game and advanced to the quarterfinals.

It is to be noted that Han Yue was visibly fatigued as she was coming back from a gruelling 78 minute match yesterday, whereas Sindhu had a day’s break since her 28 minute round one match, where her opponent retired hurt midway through game two.

Final score: PV Sindhu 2-1 Han Yue (18-21, 21-12, 21-16).
