Violence during Kabaddi tournament in Derby; After two years, 3 Indians found guilty, court sentenced them to 11 years’ imprisonment
UK kabaddi tournament clash: A British court has sentenced three Indian citizens to a total of more than 11 years in prison in connection with a violent clash during a Kabaddi tournament to be held in the year 2023 in the city of Derby, located in the East Midlands region of England. This incident is related to the violence that took place during the sporting event, in which weapons were used openly and many people were injured.
Derbyshire Police said in its statement issued on Friday that the three convicted Indians have been identified as Damanjit Singh (35), Buta Singh (35) and Rajvinder Takhar Singh (42). All three were found involved in a violent clash that took place during the Kabaddi tournament held in Alvaston area on August 20, 2023. After this incident, panic spread in the area and police received information of firing and fighting with weapons.
Violence near Elvaston Lane
According to the police, information about violence was received near Elvaston Lane around 4 pm on Sunday afternoon after which heavy police force reached the spot. In the video footage that emerged during the investigation, Buta Singh was seen chasing the opposing group. Although the footage did not show a weapon in his hand, two days later when the police stopped his car, two machetes (big knives) were recovered from the boot of the car.
The trial took place at Derby Crown Court.
Meanwhile, in the video evidence, Damanjit Singh and Rajvinder Takhar Singh were clearly seen brandishing big knives during the clash. The police arrested all three and framed serious charges against them. All three accused pleaded innocent in court, but after a trial at Derby Crown Court a jury found them guilty.

The court sentenced Buta Singh to four years in jail, while Damanjit Singh was given three years and four months and Rajwinder Takhar Singh was given three years and 10 months. In this way, all three together will have to face a total imprisonment of more than 11 years.
Two other accused facing trial in this case were acquitted by the jury due to lack of evidence. Police also said that earlier last year, seven people of Indian origin had been sent to jail in another case related to the same violence.

Senior investigating officer Detective Chief Inspector Matt Croom said the incident was “extremely terrifying, not only for the spectators present there but for the people of the entire area.” He said that the police express its gratitude to all the people who cooperated in the investigation. The police investigation also revealed that the clash was pre-planned and that a group had gathered on Derby’s Brunswick Street before the incident.
