Despite Rahul Gandhi’s efforts, Bhupen Bora disagrees on policies, speculations about joining BJP

New turn in Assam politics: Bhupen Bora hints at joining BJP

Guwahati. There is a possibility of a significant change in the political situation of Assam. Bhupen Bora has recently announced his resignation from the Indian National Congress, after which discussions about his joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have intensified. State Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has clarified that Bora can become a part of BJP on February 22, and some other Congress leaders can also join BJP along with him.

Resignation and possible joining BJP

On Monday, Bora formally announced his resignation from Congress. However, the party leadership requested him to reconsider his decision. There are reports that Rahul Gandhi also made efforts to replace him, but the possibility of him joining BJP has increased the political stir.

Chief Minister’s welcome and claim to return home

Speaking on the issue, Chief Minister Sarma said that the party leadership has approved Bora’s possible membership and he will be welcomed. Sarma termed it a “homecoming”, pointing out that the BJP believes in worker-based politics rather than dynastic politics.

Discussion and decision process with supporters

Speaking to reporters, Bora said that he will consult his supporters and the residents of Lakhimpur before taking his final decision. Making indirect comments on some Congress leaders, he said that they can stay in the party, but do not agree with its ideology.

Ticket disputes and old rivalries

Bora also alleged that during the Samaguri Assembly by-election, senior leaders had proposed his name, but he was not given the ticket. When this seat became vacant, Rakibul Hussain’s son was made the candidate, who lost to the BJP candidate.

Disagreement over alliance with AIUDF

Bora had opposed the Congress’ alliance with the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) for the 2021 assembly elections. He repeatedly conveyed his concerns to the party leadership, but the alliance later fell apart. In the Lok Sabha elections, Rakibul Hussain defeated AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal by a huge margin.

Bhupen Bora’s next step may affect the political direction of Assam. If he joins the BJP, it will prove to be a major blow to the Congress and will signal a significant change in Assam politics. All eyes are now on his final decision.
