How did this accident happen?

Why did Birju Kumar fall into the drain? Birju Kumar and his friend were returning home that night when they were drunk. Kumar fell into an open manhole located on DDA land. I was also very drunk and couldn’t understand what was happening.” The next day, a search was started for Kumar and his slippers were found near the manhole. His body was taken out on Tuesday. Increasing problem of open pits in Delhi

Dhyani had fallen along with his motorcycle into a 15 feet deep pit dug by DJB in Janakpuri. His family rushed to several police stations for help, but no immediate help was received. Delhi Jal Board officials were suspended in this case. Such accidents continuously warn the city that open pits and unsafe drains can prove fatal for people.

Did the administration take security measures?

Have security arrangements been made in the area? Local officials covered the manhole after the incident and said they would take necessary action after investigation. Last month in Noida too, 27-year-old software engineer Yuvraj Mehta died after his car fell into an open drain. Such incidents highlight shortcomings in security.

Warning for Delhiites

Could this accident have been avoided? Experts say that it is mandatory to install warning boards, restrictions and reflectors around open pits and drains. Apart from this, local administration and citizens should remain alert so that such accidents are not repeated.

Who was Birju Kumar and how did he die?

Birju Kumar was a resident of Samastipur district of Bihar. He came to Delhi to earn his living and supported his family by working as a daily wage labourer. He is said to be the only earning member of the family. This sudden incident has spread deep mourning in his village and family. Preliminary investigation has revealed that the drain into which Birju fell was located on Delhi Development Authority (DDA) land. The police is investigating which department was responsible for leaving the drain open and whether there was negligence in it.

Politics and allegations

This incident also increased the political temperature. Aam Aadmi Party leader Saurabh Bhardwaj attacked Delhi’s BJP government on ‘X’ and wrote, “A man fell into a deep drain while walking on the road in Rohini Sector 32. Even the body was not found. Rekha Gupta’s government is only engaged in photo-ops and speeches. She wants to run a circus, not a government.” This is not the first case. On February 6, 25-year-old Kamal Dhyani died after falling into a 15 feet deep pit in Janakpuri. Local people are continuously demanding from the administration that all the open drains and uncovered manholes of the city should be covered immediately and strict action should be taken against the negligent officials.
